WATCH: Exclusive Interview with Maltese Athlete Kurt Zahra

Around a month ago , PM Robert Abela stated that sports in Malta is a hobby, and in some occasions, sports was not considered as a profession within the Coronavirus restrictions,  which left the majority of the Maltese athletes in devastation.

I sat down with Kurt Zahra, a Maltese sprinter who is aiming to represent Malta in the next Olympic games. Kurt is currently representing Malta in Andorra, in an event which was organised for young athletes to compete at a high Level.

Watch the interview below:

Speaking with Kurt Zahra in the interview, he stated that facilities in Malta needs to be upgraded as it was a long time ago since they were boosted with a better training environment.

He also commented on the Prime Minster’s quote regarding sports in Malta. He said that Maltese athletes are doing a great success in events abroad, as it is seen clearly in these few years were Kurt himself won a 3rd placed Bronze Medal in a similar competition.

Malta are trying to enforce new facilities to these young athletes, with the Parliament Secretary For Youths,Sports And Organizations providing enough funds alongside the government to make sure that the talent of these athletes will keep improving in the best way.

He pointed out that the every athlete in our island needs support from the government , hence it will give them a huge uplift to carry on doing what’s best for them in their professional careers.

During the Coronavirus, sports in Malta had to stop due to the outbreak occurring last summer that continued throughout the year. At first sports in Malta started as planned , but in March the public health decided to stop all sports activities around the Malta, including contact and non-contact sport.

A month later , Coronavirus cases started to decrease again which led for some release of restrictions that included sport. The last sport that was given approval was football, leaving the Malta Football Association with no option but to give the league to the team that was standing on top of the table.

This led to outbreak in the country, with all the Maltese athletes coming all as union and pointing the fact that sport in Malta is not just a hobby but it is a way of life. Some athletes in our country treat sports as their profession, which is something that everyone is building on.

He also mentioned the fact some athlete’s are considering of quitting their profession after hearing those comments in the public. He stated that these comments didn’t effect him as he is used to criticism, but not every athlete have the willingness and belief to carry on building on their careers.

The most important thing for every athlete that is targeting to compete at a high level is to never give up on their dreams and keep believing in their selves , as one day they will surely reach their ultimate target.
